Hi I want to transfer old vhc-c tapes to dvd. I got an EzCap 108 DC60+ using composite. I dont know . My questions is:

Which resolution and bitrate is to prefer if I want good picture quality?
Which software is best between ShowBiz DVD 2 and Ulead Videostudio (got them both)?
Is it really better to use the composite? I read something about separate luminance with svideo.

I have been offering a vhs to dvd service for the last 6 weeks and have done 13 paid conversions in this time. All customers have been very happy with the end result and I am now getting referrals on the work I have done.

I did  lot of trials/testings before I settled on what I now offer to customers. Here's my findings and settings. Others may be different.

I am using an ezcap116

1. I found the best picture quality was not via s-video but scart to phono.
2. I purchased a switchable scart to phono that was gold plated and also had ofc cables. They are top quality that give you the least signal decrease from your vhs player to your pc. They will cost you approx £15 but they are worth every penny.
3. The following settings are optomised for people who want to watch their new dvd on the tv. Not their computer.

Open Ulead,
At the top, select,  File > Project Properties > Edit > General > and make sure "frame size" is set to 730 X 576
In the same window, click on "compression > and push the slider from 70 to 100.
In the same window, Change the audio format to Mpeg audio and click on OK at the bottom.

Now click on file > preferences > edit > and make sure the "resampling quality" window is set to "best" and click on OK

Now click on the "capture" buton at the top and then change the "format" to dvd.

That's it.

Hi bigweeal. Thanks a lot for your reply!

I've changed all my configurations according to your settings and captured 1minute from VHS. The results were:
  • 1minute created a 46MB *.Mpg file
  • The quality is awesome when playing on the PC
  • Playing the same file through a pen disk in Divx Player results in "jumps"(don't know a better term for this, sorry) in image and sound.

I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong with configurations but I don't think so. Your "tutorial" was perfect and I was able to change all configs according to yours.

One more doubt: The file generated (*.MPG) is editable to create scenes/menus? If so, what is the best software to do it? Video is a subject which I am not comfortable with  Roll Eyes

Once again, thank you!

Regards

I have never tried it in a pen drive straight into the dvd player. My dvd player does not have a usb port.

Do a test. Burn it straight onto a dvd as an *.MPG and try it in the player.

>One more doubt: The file generated (*.MPG) is editable to create scenes/menus? If so,
Again, I do not know. I can tell you how to do it if you are going to render into digital and burn on to a dvd. It can all be done on ulead.

It is very time consuming. For every hour of footage you have, it takes approx 80mins to render it. So set it up and walk away.

There are also lots of effects and editing that can be done. But lets just focus on burning for now.

After many hours of fiddling and testing, here are my settings I use in ulead.

1. Never allocate more than 1hr 10mins to 1 dvd.
2. Never set it to burn the disc at max speed. You will get lots of coasters. I set mine to 8 x speed max.

To add chapters and burn to disc
At the very top, click on "share" and then click on "create disc"
On the new window that opens, clcik on "add video files" (top left) and load your video.
Make sure the "create menu" box is ticked.
Click on "add/edit chapter"
On the new window that opens, click and drag your mouse over the blue line under the video footage. When you get to the point you want to add a chapter, click on "add chapter". You can fine tune it so you get the exact point you want to split it. To the right hand side of the blue line there is a small dial you can drag that moves your footage 1/10th of a second at a time.

When you are done, click "ok" at the bottom. The window will close and you will see the 1st window again. You will not see the chapters there, but if you put your mouse over the little video at the bottom it will say how many chapters there are.

Click on "next" at the bottom and a new window will open. This is your menu for the dvd. If you only see one template, click on the blue box on the top left and select "all"
Click on what menu you want to use and edit it. Once you have done that, you will see a small blue box below the screen you have just edited. It will say "main menu". Change it to whatever the one is below. (normally the name of your file). This now shows you your chapter menu. Select whatever template you want to use and edit it.

(You will see a small remote control on the right hand side. This is to preview what everything will look like.)

Almost done  Smiley

Click on "next" at the bottom and it will take you to the burn screen.
At the bottom left, you will see a disc with an "i" on it. (more settings for burning) Click on it and in the new window, select the speed to 8x and click on "ok"

Click on "burn" It will tell you it's going to take time to render. Click "ok" and you're done.

*************

I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the quality when you play it back through your tv.

WOW, what a post!!  Shocked

I'll burn the file to a DVD and test it in my Divx player. Unfortunately the weekend is over and work is calling me but I'll try all your advices as soon as I can.

Thank you a LOT!

Well, I'll install windows XP x86 on my desktop since I don't have a DVD-RW drive on my laptop. On my desktop I have Windows 7 x64 that does not recognize STK (not even a virtual machine with XP x86  Undecided)

I'll keep in touch...

I've finished right now to test your configurations on my new fresh XP install. Can't write a DVD right now but as soon as I get some time I'll burn it and refresh this post (with awesome news I hope  Grin).

Well, I have burnt the project to a DVD and you're absolutely right, the quality is amazing!!  Shocked

I have 2 questions:
  • I have created some chapters and they were displayed even after I choose the template. However they are not displayed when playing the DVD on my DVD player (only appears one chapter in the menu when playing preview in Ulead). The option "Create Menu" was checked
  • Is there a way to remove the mp3 file that plays when the menu is displayed? I can do it creating a blank mp3 but it is simpler if there is an option

Thank you

Hello Narku

I have created some chapters  (only appears one chapter in the menu when playing preview in Ulead)
If it only appears as one chapter in preview, this is all you will get when you burn it. You must have done something wrong.

When you are in ulead, put your mouse over "the chapter" you see and "click". If a small yellow flag appears, it means there are more chapters. If you click on the chapter, it will open the chapter menu and show you them all. If you do not see a yellow flag, it means there is only one chapter.

Is there a way to remove the mp3 file that plays when the menu is displayed? I can do it creating a blank mp3 but it is simpler if there is an option
Yes there is

When you click on "create disc" and then add a movie, and click "next"
At the top left hand corner you will see it is in "Gallery" mode. Click on the "Edit" tab
Click on the "background music" icon and select "delete music track" and then click on "next" at the very bottom to continue

Hi bigweeal.

There isn't any yellow flag on the video file displayed on Ulead but if I put the mouse on that file it says that it has "X" chapters.
One thing that must be important: I have two different Menus to display (I don't know why): "Main Menu" and "Untitled". All the chapters are displayed in the Untitled menu but what is being burnt to DVD is Main Menu project since the only displayed chapter on preview is the only displayed chapter on DVD.

Also, I deleted the track sound in the menu and it remains playing on DVD.

With this 2 "kinky" problems it sounds that all the changes I've done to the project were saved on another project (named Untitled).

The problem with the track is solved. I deleted it from the Main Menu also.

The menu displayed on DVD is the Main Menu so all the chapters that I had created before are only displayed when I choose the only video file that appears on the Menu (it's like a sub-menu)
